FDA Finally Bans Red Dye No. 3 After 35 Years of Known Cancer Risk

In a long-overdue decision, the FDA has announced it will ban Red Dye No. 3 (erythrosine) from food products, 35 years after the agency's own scientists determined it caused cancer in laboratory animals.

The dye, found in thousands of products including candies, cereals, and baked goods, was already banned from cosmetics in 1990 due to cancer concerns—but inexplicably remained legal in food.

Timeline of Failure

  • 1990: FDA bans Red 3 in cosmetics due to thyroid cancer risk
  • 1990-2024: FDA fails to act on food despite same evidence
  • 2023: California bans Red 3 in state
  • 2025: FDA finally announces federal ban

Products Affected

Major brands will need to reformulate products including certain candies, frostings, and artificially colored foods. Companies have until 2027 to comply.
