Eighteen states will now restrict SNAP benefits from being used to purchase soda, candy, and other processed foods, marking the largest reform to the food assistance program in decades.
MAHA ANGLE: 'For years, SNAP has used taxpayer dollars to fund soda and candy -- products that fuel America's diabetes and chronic disease epidemics,' said HHS Secretary Kennedy. 'These waivers help put real food back at the center of the program.'
Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia began restrictions on January 1, 2026. Texas and Florida will follow in Spring 2026. Each state defines restricted items differently, but most ban soft drinks, energy drinks, and candy.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins signed the waivers: 'With these new waivers, we are empowering states to lead, protecting our children from the dangers of highly-processed foods, and moving one step closer to the President's promise to Make America Healthy Again.'
What you can do: If you're in a non-participating state, contact your governor and encourage them to apply for a SNAP food restriction waiver.
