Three More States Move to Ban Glyphosate: Roundup's Days Numbered?
Legislators in New York, Massachusetts, and Oregon have introduced bills to ban the herbicide glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—following growing evidence of health risks and billions of dollars in lawsuit settlements by manufacturer Bayer.
If passed, these states would join an international movement that has seen glyphosate restricted or banned in over 30 countries worldwide.
Why Glyphosate Matters
- Most widely used herbicide in the world—250+ million pounds sprayed annually in the US
- Found in 80% of urine samples in CDC biomonitoring studies
- Classified as "probably carcinogenic" by WHO's cancer research agency
- Bayer has paid over $11 billion to settle cancer lawsuits
Industry Pushback
Agricultural chemical lobbying groups have launched campaigns against the bills, claiming bans would devastate farming. However, organic farmers have successfully produced crops without glyphosate for decades.
